Salem's senior softball
players had a joyful experience during their "Senior Recognition" game
Monday afternoon against Westland John Glenn.
Brianna Lee made sure of it.
Lee, a junior, smacked a three-run home run and shut out the
Rockets over four innings on the mound to lead the Rocks to a 13-3,
six-inning triumph.
Salem is now 11-8 heading into Wednesday's home double-header
against Novi.
Lee was the brightest star, but far from the only one for the
winners. Senior Mary Johnson was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3,
and fellow senior Amanda Dewyer also rose to the occasion, registering
a season-high two hits.
Lee struck out 10 while yielding two hits and no walks.
"This was our first game since Thursday (a 2-1, 14-inning
victory over Canton)," said Salem coach Bonnie Southerland. "We had to
adjust to the pitching. It was nice to see we came up with 18 hits. The
girls were swinging the bat well."
Heidi Schmidt was also a tough out for the Rockets, lacing a
single, double and triple to go along with two RBI. Other hot hitters
included Alexis Powell (2-for-4, RBI), Jennifer First (3-for-4, RBI),
Katie Kinney (two RBI) and Katie Meade (double).
Salem led 10-0 after two frames. Schmidt was the igniter,
drilling a lead-off triple in the first before eventually scoring. The
Rocks tallied nine runs in the second to distance themselves from the
up-and-coming Rockets.
