Getting hits off Salem
pitcher Brianna Lee was an issue for Livonia Churchill Monday afternoon.
Actually, just hitting the ball against Lee's high-level menu of
pitches was a challenge for the Chargers.
Lee struck out a season-high 16 batters and carried a no-hitter
into the seventh inning before yielding a two-out double to Abby Jewell
to lead the Rocks to a 2-0 victory.
The win improved Salem's overall mark to 9-6 while its division
record was squared up at 3-3.
"Bri was very focused today and pitched her best game so far
this season," said Salem coach Bonnie Southerland. "I am confident
there will be plenty more this season.
"This was a good win coming off a tough tourney loss this past
weekend."
Salem scored the game's only runs in the sixth inning when Lee
knocked in Alexis Powell, who reached on a walk. Jenny First then laid
down a perfect bunt to score Lee with the insurance run.
In addition to Lee's two-hit day, Kelli Janiczek excelled at the
plate for the winners, ripping a pair of singles. Katie Kinney and
Heidi Schmidt also laced singles to contribute to Salem's seven-hit
attack.
On Wednesday, the Rocks will take on South Lyon, which is
unbeaten in the KLAA Central Division.
On Thursday at 7 p.m.,they will square off against unbeaten
Canton in the two teams' showdown at Massey Field.
