Salem's hockey team rebounded from its only loss of the season
in a big way this week, recording impressive victories over Clarkston
(8-3 on Thursday) and Farmington United (6-4 on Saturday).
The victory over Clarkston was a united effort by the Rocks as
eight different players lit the lamp.
"Clarkston is a good team and this was a good win for us," said
Salem coach Ryan Ossenmacher. "We have been struggling with the
beginnings of games, and today was a good sign with two quick
first-period goals.
"We still need to find more consistency from shift to shift and
period to period. We are expecting our team leaders to step up and get
our team emotionally ready to start the game."
Michael Manser and Alek Zultowski got things rolling for the
Rocks, scoring first-period goals. Austin Sartorius and Mark McGee
assisted Manser while Jake Fedel and Max Coral got helpers on
Zultowski's first high school net-finder.
Matt Downey deposited the Rocks' lone second-period goal.
Recording goals in Salem's third-period avalanche were McGee
(from Sartorius and Manser), Ryan Quigley (from Manser and McGee),
Connor Berlin (from Downey and Nick Hayes), Kyle Downey (from Berlin
and Wes Carr) and Carr (from Evan Patton).
Brandon Price earned the victory in net for Salem, which outshot
Clarkston, 43-24.
Manser and Berlin spearheaded the 6-4 triumph over Farmington
with two goals a piece. Hayes and Matt Downey also registered goals.
Picking up assists were McGee (two), Sartorius, Quigley (two),
Kyle Downey, Matt Downey and Kyle Eggenberger.
"Farmington was coming off a 3-1 win over Northville, so this
was another good win for us," said Ossenmacher. "Again, we started off
quick, jumping off to a 2-0 lead, but we had some letdowns that allowed
them to battle back into the game.
"For the fourth game in a row we won the third period, which was
one of our goals going into each game. We struggled again with
our shift-to-shift consistency, but we found a way to win against a
very good team."
Price earned the win in net, stopped 29 shots.
