Salem solidifies hold on first place
in KLAA Central Division

April  27, 2010, 11:58 p.m.

One week after a hold-your-breath-until-the-end victory over Novi, Salem's boys track-and-field team recorded a breather over South Lyon East Tuesday afternoon at the PCEP varsity stadium.

The Cougars couldn't keep up with the Rocks' amazing depth in the 90.5-46.5 home team triumph. Salem nipped Novi, 69.5-67.5 on April 20.

Salem improved to 3-0 as it zeroes in on a second consecutive KLAA Central Division title.

Among the highlights of the lopsided meet were Dion Walker's victory in the 110-meter high hurdles as he edged East's Mark McLaughlin by three-hundredths of a second.

Freshman Terez Smith, who stands 6-foot-5, won the 300 hurdles in 45.8.

The most exciting race of the day was the 800-meter relay, which Salem won when anchor runner Austin Root outleaned his East counterpart at the finish line.

Salem was its usual outstanding self in the field events, winning four of the five competitions. John Krutty won the pole vault by a foot with an 11-6 effort, while Ethan Walsh threw a season-best 144-7 in the discus.
