Goal of making KLAA meet still realistic for Rocks after lopsided win

Salem's girls track-and-field team demolished visiting South Lyon East, 94-43, Tuesday afternoon to stay in the hunt for a berth in the inaugural KLAA Association meet.

The top two teams in each of the KLAA's four divisions are invited to participate in the year-end association meet. Salem is now 2-1, so if the Rocks can win their final two dual meets, they're in.

"It's been our goal this year to make this meet and we came one step closer last night," said Salem coach Dale Maskill. "Our biggest challenge will be next week against Northville. Both teams have improved over last season and from what I've seen of Northville, it will come down to who wants it more.

"It looks like we are strong in some events where they have some weaknesses and they are strong where we have some weaknesses. It looks like they have a little higher-caliber athletes and we are a little deeper. It should be a very competitive and exciting track meet."

Maskill had high praise for Tuesday's opponent, despite the one-sided score.

"South Lyon East is a well-coached, competitive team," he said. "The girls at that school run harder than any other school we run against. Fortunately for us, their numbers are low.

"Competing against them allows us to move some kids in different events and learn more about our team. It also gives our younger kids a chance to compete for wins in their events."

Among the youngsters who excelled on Tuesday were freshman Madison Goodpasture, who won the 3,200-meter run; and sophomores Amanda Beyer (1,600), Breanna Frye (100 dash) and Kristina Righter (shot put), all of whom won their respective events.

"We learned that Jordyn Moore, normally an 800-meter and 1,600-meter runner, has more foot speed than we thought, winning the 200 and 400 dashes," Maskill said.
