Salem's boys swimming and diving team enjoyed a dazzling season
debut at Saturday's 36th Annual Eastern Michigan Classic.
The Rocks racked up 134 points to out-touch seven other teams,
including runner-up Dexter, which finished three points back.
"It's always nice to start off the season with a win," said
Salem head coach Chuck Olson.
The Rocks already notched four state cuts: Adam Seroka leading
off the 1,500 relay; Matt Collingwood's 200 leg in the 800 free relay;
and Collingwood's 100 leg in the 400 freestyle relay.
Completing the standings were Toledo St. Johns (118), Novi
(116), Monroe (110), West Bloomfield (77), University of Detroit Jesuit
(75) and Troy Athens, which finished with 59 points.
Salem earned first-place points in the meet's second event, the
800-yard freestyle relay. The Rocks' winning foursome consisted of
Collingwood, Eric Li, Jason Zhang and Scott Carpenter.
The Rocks placed second in the 200 free relay thanks to solid
efforts from Steven Clagg, Jeremy Horvath, Jerry Bai and Noah Santer.
Salem's finest effort may have come in the 1,500 frees relay,
which it won by 32 seconds over runner-up Novi. The winning trio
consisted of Adam Seroka, Max Mills and Collingwood.
The Rocks won the diving competition with 198.10 points, five
more than second-place Toledo St. Johns.
Salem's 200 butterfly relay foursome of Jeremy Wellman, Patrick
Huls, Jerry Bai and Eric Li placed third, while the 200 backstroke
quartet of Huls, Aaron Micek, Li and Wellman also picked up third-place
points.
Salem capped the day on a high note by winning the 400 freestyle
relay in 3:18.48. The foursome consisted of Collingwood, Santer, Mills
and Seroka.
