Salem's wrestling team opened its 2010-11 season Saturday at the Grover Memorial Wrestling Tournament, which was hosted by Concord High School.

Several Rocks wrestled well, in particular junior Nick Kim, who won his weight class with an 18-4 major-decision victory over Gobles' Jamie Summerville.

Also placing for the Rocks were Tyler Gross (third), Dylan Hatcher (fourth) and Jake McCabe (fourth).

"Overall, it was a good beginning for a young team," said first-year coach Pete Israel. "It was a good showing for some of our new wrestlers who were wrestling in their first varsity matches."

Israel noted the fine performances of 152-pound freshman Pete Contos, who rallied to upend Lumen Christi's Sean Leigh; freshman Conner Thornbury, who pinned Lumen Christi's Wes Smith; and senior Jordan Zhou, who registered a pair of pins.

The Rocks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Clinton High School.
