Three months (and 50 degrees) removed from its season-opening
two-a-days camp at the Sauk Valley Resort in the Irish Hills, Salem's
football program brought the curtain down on the 2010 season Thursday
night with a spirited under-the-lights scrimmage against visiting Ann
Arbor Huron.
The Rocks and River Rats took advantage of an MHSAA rule that
allows for four scrimmages during the course of the season.
There were officials, Salem wore its game jerseys and there were
fans -- everything you'd find at a regular-season game with the
exception of a working scoreboard. (Unofficially, Salem won, 28-19).
"I thought it went very well," said Salem head coach Kurt
Britnell, whose team squared off against Walled Lake Western in a
post-season scrimmage last fall. "A lot of our young kids got some
valuable experience, and I thought they played really well, with the
exception of the opening kickoff (which Huron returned for a TD).
The night's highlights were provided by some familiar names as
well as some promoted JV and freshmen standouts.
"Marcus Houston made a couple of spectacular runs," Britnell
said. "He had a 65-yarder right after halftime where he made about five
incredible cuts; it was unbelievable.
"Our quarterback, Jacob Deprez, looked sharp. We didn't throw
much, but he had a couple nice completions, one to Ryan Jankowski for a
long TD."
Britnell also praised the play of Drake Jordan, Cameron Warner,
Herve Nonga and Gu'won Ingram (the first cousin of Heisman Trophy
winner Mark Ingram).

Jankowski scored after bringing in a 55-yard pass from Jacob Deprez.
