Salem ties for 22nd at 48th Jim Mooney Williamston Classic

  Salem's wrestling team placed 22nd at Saturday's 48th Annual Jim Mooney  Williamston Classic.

  The Rocks earned 40 points, 191 fewer than first-place and state-ranked Holt. Rounding out the top-five spots were Corunna (173), Howell (147), Mason (135) and Holland (134).

  Two Rocks placed at Saturday's tournament. Senior Jimmy Gross earned a fourth-place medal at 160 pounds.  Gross opened by pinning Union City's Jason Gruner in 1:18 and then decisioning Tyler Kaffenberger of Grand Haven, 8-6.

  Gross fell to Jordan Graham of Big Rapids, 12-0, in round three before battling back to earn fourth.

  The Rocks' other placer was  119-pound Cody Korpus, who placed sixth. After dropping his opening match, Korpus bounced back to pin Manley Ramos of Battle Creek Central in 36 seconds. He then edged Alex Molloy of Southgate Anderson, 6-4, before outgrappling Taylor Moore of Howell, 9-4.

  Korpus dropped the fifth-sixth-place match to Devin Pauwels of New Boston Huron.
