The score was respectable.
The performance wasn't, according to Salem football coach Kurt
Britnell, whose Rocks dropped a 21-7 decision at Livonia Stevenson
Friday night.
The loss dropped the falling Rocks to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the
KLAA Central Division.
Salem will host winless Wayne Memorial in next Friday's KLAA
Kensington Conference cross-over game.
"We just don't have it," said Britnell. "We don't block well. We
don't tackle well. There was little excitement tonight."
Britnell said he's hopeful the Rocks emotions will rise heading
into next week's game against the Zebras.
"But who knows," he said. "We thought they'd be up the past four
weeks."
Trailing 14-0 late in the first half, Salem sliced its deficit
in half when senior quarterback Drew Thompson connected with senior
tight end Ethan Walsh on a 40-yard touchdown strike 29 ticks before the
intermission.
But the Spartans countered by scoring a third-quarter TD to
re-up its advantage to 21-7.
"We had a nice play with a minute left to get deep in their
territory, but we couldn't finish the drive," Britnell said.
Walsh was a bright spot for the Rocks. In addition to his TD, he
picked off a pass and recorded six tackles, three for losses.
Alex Brown registered a sack for the Rocks.
Omar Kandah also played well, making a team-high seven tackles.
Brian Auquier hauled in a pair of Thompson passes for 70 yards.
