The Wayne
Memorial Wolfpack is led by fifth-year head coach Steve Vasiloff.
Vasiloff was voted Co-Regional Coach of the Year by his peers last year
because of the tremendous turnaround in the number of wrestlers and
academic achievement over past years.
Coach Vasiloff is again assisted by rich Donahee (fourth year)
and Robert Freeman (third year). Joining the staff this year is Pat
Gorring, a former Wayne captain and standout wrestler.
The Wolfpack went 13-11 last year, its first winning season in a
long time. More than 20 wrestlers had a GPA of 3.5 or above. Tevin
Hines, a second-year wrestler, was a regional qualifier.
The Wolfpack lost senior starters Hines (135) and Max Hershey
(160) to graduation, and junior Mike Wallace (27-12, 125 pounds)
transferred to Romulus.
Leading this year's team will be captains Josh Mills, Darryl
Ison and Dylan Korzetki. Mills and Ison attended the 28-day J. Robinson
camp in Minnesota and will be counted on to help continue the
resurgence of wrestling at Wayne Memorial.
Many other wrestlers worked throughout the summer to improve
their skills, participating in the Milan Summer Duals, the Churchill
summer tournament, Border Wars, and various technique camps.
The number of wrestlers in the program remains high thanks in
part to a very large, athletic and enthusiastic freshman class. Several
weight classes appear wide open, but an early read on the varsity
line-up is given below:
112 - Tristan Jarosicwicz, sophomore (26-16);
119 - Darryl Ison, junior (23-17);
135 - Terry McCartney, junior;
140 - Anwar Oliver, senior;
145 - Jalen Jones, junior (19-16);
152 - Brandon Whittenberg, senior (27-17);
160 - Josh Mills, senior (30-13);
189 - Dimitrus Renfroe, sophomore (18-22);
215 - Dylan Korzetki, senior (23-22); and
285 - Chris Bowie, senior (11-15).
The Wolfpack's goal for the 2009-10 wrestling season is to
continue the turnaround that began last season. This means having
another winning season, improving upon last year's fifth-place finish
in the KLAA South and having multiple wrestlers competing in the
individual regional and/or state tournament.
