The Wolfpack are off to a 4-0 start and have beaten some teams with strong wrestling tradition.  On opening night, Wayne Memorial hosted Lincoln Park and Gibraltar Carlson.

   Against
Lincoln Park, Wayne won seven matches in a row to take an early lead.  The Railsplitters have had a strong program for many years, but the Wolfpack dominated this dual, winning 54-19.

Gibraltar Carlson was next, and Wayne scored a lopsided 60-13 victory.  Going 2-0 on the night were Terry McCartney, Jalen Jones, Kevin Newborn, Adam Kay, Dimitrus Renfroe, Nate Cavanaugh, David Crummey, Devon Adams, and Allen Parker.  Wins and other great matches came from Sam Ekanem, Tyler Mulligan, Darryl Ison, and Tristan Jarosicwicz.

Over this past weekend, Wayne Memorial sent teams to three different tournaments, and wrestlers at all levels were able to hold their own.  At Berkley, the varsity squad finished second out of ten teams, right behind Catholic Central’s Varsity B team.  Seven Wolfpack wrestlers placed.  Devon Adams took 1st; Jalen Jones, Kevin Newborn, Lucas Hofbauer, and Dimitrus Renfroe took 2nd; and Tristan Jarosicwicz and Terry McCartney placed 4th.

At the Blissfield Invitational, the B team took third out of 13 teams.  Nine wrestlers placed.  Sam Ekanem took 1st; Pablo Flores, Micheil Hood, and Alan Parker placed 2nd; Doug Rutan and Nate Cavanagh took 3rd; and Tyler Mulligan, Sharif Hegazi, and Devin Korzetki placed 4th.

The junior varsity wrestlers traveled to Ann Arbor Pioneer tournament and many of them brought home medals.

This past Wednesday Wayne traveled to Waterford Kettering for a quad against two KLAA opponents.  Kettering was up first and the Wolfpack put a hurting on the two-time KLAA North champions, pinning their way to a 54-18 victory.  Wayne went on to beat an undermanned Waterford Mott team 67-12.  Double winners on the night were Jalen Jones, Kevin Newborn, Sam Ekanem, Dimitrus Renfroe, Sheldon Crummey, Darryl Ison, Alan Parker, Devon Adams, and Terry McCartney.  Also posting wins on the night were Doug Rutan, Nate Cavanaugh, Tyler Mulligan, and Rakeem Givens.

The B team also saw action on Wednesday,  defeating Woodhaven's B team 52-24, and losing to  Romulus Summit Academy's A team 33-33 on tiebreaker criteria H, which team scores the most first points.

Head Coach Steve Vasiloff is really high on his team.  “This is year 6 for me, and my first three years were really rocky.  Now we are an established program, and are working on our third winning season.  Numbers are high, and we are hoping to have another all-state academic team this year.”  With over 50 kids on the roster and all getting plenty of mat time, it won’t be long before the Wolfpack starts running with the big dogs.

Wayne will be hosting their 2nd Annual Freshman and Sophomore Classic this Saturday, December 11.  Wrestling starts at 9:00 AM.
