Wildcat spikers 2nd at UMD tournament


 

  Plymouth's volleyball team placed second at Saturday's UMD Tournament, losing to cross-campus rival Canton in the final match.
  The Wildcats went 5-1 on the day to improve their overall mark to 7-1.
  The Chiefs captured the title match 25-21 and 25-20.
  "Both teams played aggressive volleyball today," said Plymouth coach Kelly McCausland. "Canton's Jordan Kielty and Kristin Muir played great offensively and Lauren Macuga played outstanding as the libero.
  "We struggled with our serve receive against them, bu It think we made some crucial plays defensively. We are looking forward to another hard-fought match by both teams when we face each other in our conference game in two weeks."
  In pool play, Plymouth defeated Roseville (25-20, 26-24), Detroit Mumford (25-5, 25-5) and Lakeview (25-10, 25-7).
  In bracket play, the Wildcats ousted Northville, 25-19, 27-25, before advancing to the finals with a 25-23, 25-20 triumph over Dearborn Edsel Ford.
  Kelly Smoltz had an all-around solid day, racking up 42 kills, 15 digs and 15 blocks. Kayla Bridge was the 'Cats' top defender, chalking up 60 digs. She also sparkled on offense, compiling 38 kills.
  Katie Salo was credited with 105 set assists and 34 digs.
  Junior block Alex Roberts also excelled, chipping in with 26 kills and a team-high 21 blocks.
