While all the teams from Oakland and Macomb counties were competing in their respective individual county tournaments Saturday, eight teams from more southern counties were enjoying some great wrestling at the Woodhaven team tournament.

Four of the eight are currently ranked by MichiganGrappler.com: Dundee (No. 3 in Division 3), Dearborn Heights Annapolis (No. 5 in Division 2), Westland John Glenn (No. 6 in Division 1) and Canton (No. 9 in Division 1).

Dundee was clearly the strongest team there, winning all five of its matches by over 20 points. It was the battle for second between the other three that was most exciting.

In the first of those match-ups, Annapolis defeated Canton, 36-31. The swing match was probably at 145 pounds between sophomores Chris Pierce of Canton and Dave Meyer of Annapolis. Both wrestlers had opportunities to record a fall, but it was Meyer who came away with the decision.

A match to make die-hard hockey fans notice the toughness of wrestlers took place at 215 pounds. A head-to-jaw collision between Cole Schossau and Ben Poirer left Poirer dazed for a moment. The referee quickly restarted the match; that is, after he picked up Poirer's broken tooth and handed it to the Canton wrestler's father. Ben picked up the decision and finished the rest of the tournament.

John Glenn defeated Annapolis for the second time this month. The score on Saturday was 36-32. In the final match-up of the evening, Canton beat the Rockets, 32-29. The key match that put it away for Canton occurred at 119 pounds where Alex Eimers scored a takedown with about 5 seconds left to win 10-9.

The tie-breaker procedure used by the tournament directors determined the top-four place winners to be: 1. Dundee; 2. Annapolis; 3. Canton; and 4. John Glenn.
