Canton vs. Catholic Central

Fall Classic - continued

Canton countered 11 seconds later when Davion Stackhouse cut through a gaping hole on the left side of the Chiefs' line and rocketed 67 yards to paydirt to bring the Chiefs to within 10-9. However, the ensuing extra point was pulled wide left, allowing the Shamrocks to head into the intermission with a one-point edge.

CC pounded the ball down the field on its opening drive of the second half and upped its advantage to 17-9 on Palazeti's 18-yard score. Justin Messner set up the TD two plays earlier when he picked up 12 yards on an inside reverse, a play that proved to be successful throughout the afternoon for the hosts.

Canton handled adversity much like it did at the end of the first half when Adam Payter raced 76 yards for a TD on the first play of the next drive to bring the Chiefs to withing 17-15. Canton knotted the classic at 17-all when a wide-open Angelo Lanava hauled in Delapaz's two-point conversion pass in the back of the end zone.

CC regained the lead, 24-17, on its next drive when it moved 80 yards on 11 plays, scoring on Palazeti's two-yard run. A drive-saving play unfolded two plays prior to the TD when Landry hit Andrew Nelson for 24 yards on a fourth-and-5 crossing pattern.

Canton struck paydirt on its third straight drive 4:43 later when Delapaz lofted a perfect 24-yard spiral to Stackhouse, who pulled in the pass at the goal line on a clutch fourth-and-9 play. Dixon's extra point deadlocked the game at 24-all with 10 minutes to play.

The Shamrocks drove to the Chiefs' 22 with 4:21 to play, but Landry was sacked for an 8-yard loss by Jake Underwood and Arron Boudreaux.

Two plays later, on a third-and-16 from the Canton 27, Landry tossed a dead-on pass to George Darany in the back of the end zone, but Canton junior safety Ryan Powell stripped the ball from Darany's grasp.

D'Agostino's 44-yard field goal attempt with 4:12 to play sailed wide left, giving the Chiefs the ball at their own 20.

Canton moved the ball deliberately down the field to the CC 25 thanks to four productive runs by Payter and a huge third-and-9 connection between Delapaz and Powell.

However, the Chiefs lost four yards on the next three plays and were forced to try to win the game with a 47-yard field into a soft breeze with 3.5 seconds left. Dixon's attempt was straight but short, forcing the overtime.

Canton won the coin toss and elected to go on defense first in the OT.

Capatina took all the drama out of CC's first possession when he raced around the right end and into the end zone on the first play. D'Agostino then ripped the extra point to make it 31-24.

Canton lost two yards on two runs to start its OT possession. The Chiefs then failed to connect on two pass plays and the Shamrocks had survived.

Payter led all rushers with 170 yards on 17 carries. Stackhouse picked up 79 yards on seven hauls.

Delapaz completed 3-of-10 passes for 96 yards.

Capatina paced the CC running game with 105 yards on 17 carries. Palazeti was also productive, running 17 times for 79 yards and three scores.

Landry completed 6-of-12 passes for 90 yards.

Underwood, Boudreaux and Kevin Buford all racked up 10 tackles each for Canton's defense.

The Shamrocks' defense was led by Michael Kinville, Palazeti, Joe Snyder, Brandon Tammaro and Jeff Sherman.
