Canton's offense back on track in 35-0 thrashing of Lakeland; 'D' dials 0 again

  BY ED WRIGHT

Following last week's muddy quagmire in Brighton, White Lake Lakeland's firm, dry football field must have seemed like the Bonneville Salt Flats to Canton's running backs Thursday night.
The Chiefs didn't set any land speed records, but they repeatedly left a trail of dust on their way to the end zone in their 35-0 spanking of the Eagles.
"We pounded the ball on the ground," said Canton coach Tim Baechler, whose team improved to 2-0. "We'd get four, five, six yards and work the clock. We only threw one pass all night (a 20-yard connection from Kevin Delapaz to Dakota Dark Bird). We consumed a lot of time and kept the ball away from their excellent offense."
Senior fullback Adam Payter enjoyed a huge night, racking up close to 200 yards rushing, Baechler estimated.
Four Chiefs scored touchdowns: Ron Gaudi (two), Payter, Davion Stackhouse and Kevin Delapaz. Freshman kicker Connor Sheenen split the uprights on all five extra points.
Several Chiefs excelled on the defensive side of the ball as they registered their second consecutive shutout.
"Jack Slater at outside linebacker and Alex Dixon inside played well," Baechler said. "And Arron Boudreaux did a nice job on their 6-5 receiver. I don't think he caught one ball."
Kevin Buford and Josh Nolan picked off passes for the Chiefs, who will put their eight-quarter shutout string on the line next Friday night against Plymouth.
