Canton's boys
tennis team was "doubles" trouble for Livonia Churchill Tuesday
afternoon in a key Kensington Lakes Activities Association match played
on the Chiefs' home courts.
Led by a 5-0 sweep from its doubles units, Canton rolled, 8-1,
to improve to 3-1 in the division.
"It's all coming together for the team with the doubles teams
setting up the points and taking every opportunity to win," said Canton
coach Barb Lehman. "The singles players are all playing with confidence
and poise. They understand the strategy and the value of patience."
Lehman offered high praise to Chiefs' No. 4 singles player Varun
Bandri, who defeated Vishal Joshi, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-2.
"Varun played an amazing match and defined himself as a singles
player today," said Lehman.
The Chiefs won three of the four singles match. Ryan Hanz led
the way, upending the Chargers' Matt Cezat, 6-4, 6-2. After No. 2 man
Riley Hoernschemeyer dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 6-1 decision to Ziwin
Deng, the Chiefs' No. 3 and 4 players -- Adam Payne and Bandri --
earned vital victories.
Payne ousted Mike Houghan, 6-3, 6-0.
Canton's No. 1 doubles tandem of Steve Lee and Jimmy LaFontaine
swept Rushi Patel and Joseph Mulka, 6-2, 7-5 while the No. 2 duo of
Jordan Anderson and Kristin Matasic knocked off Alex Zuccarini and Fred
Beshara, 6-3, 7-5.
Andrew Tidwell and Rocky Willette kept the momentum going for
Canton, dropping Churchill's Ryan McPherson and Eric Stromberg, 6-3,
6-3, at No. 3.
Finishing off the one-sided win were the No. 4 pairing of Austin
Payne and Kartik Bhatt, who defeated Kyle Appel and Mike Ingus, 6-2,
6-1; and the No. 5 squad of Aswhin Kumar and Luke Freeman, who
outlasted Tejas Soni and Mayuresh Iyer, 6-4, 6-3.
In an exhibition match, Canton's Jason Bohl and Alan Halim
defeated Brian Baumgartnar and Kenny Denstead, 8-1.
"They are playing excellent tennis as individuals and as a
doubles team," Lehman said, referring to Bohl and Halim. "They are
young, but with every match they are gaining experience for the future."
