Good day for Rocks

McCarthy pleased with team's debut

  BY ED WRIGHT

Salem wasn't quite able to defend its Balconi Invitational title Saturday, but the Rocks' effort impressed head coach Ed McCarthy.
"Overall, I was very pleased," said McCarthy. "I thought Lachlan Savage did a great job in the middle and Scott O'Connor had a fantastic day. He gave us great energy.
"Our attack was very good today and Lachlan and Scott were a big part of it."
"We have some work to do as far as getting our back line more organized, but that will improve once Sasa gets back."
Salem's All-State goalie Sasa Miskovic did not play Saturday. McCarthy said he's hoping to get him back in the line-up Wednesday when the Rocks travel to Livonia Churchill.
"I thought Dan Adsit did a great job of filling in for Sasa today," said McCarthy. "He's never been a full-time keeper before but he did a nice job stepping into that role."
Salem opened with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Novi Catholic Central. Sal Savage scored Salem's first two goals on assists from Alex Tramel and O'Connor. Evan Antich added the eventual game-winner on an assist from Lachlan Savage.
In the second game, the Rocks edged Plymouth, 1-0, on O'Connor's goal from Nick Riley.
Canton prevailed in a shootout, 3-2, in the final.
Salem battles Plymouth on Monday. The opening kick is 7 p.m.
